learning to count
it might become a habit...
Hardly anyone can really assess the impact of their actions on the environment. Yet our everyday habits, the morning cup of coffee, the things we do, the goods and services we buy and use: all of it has an environmental impact, and that impact can always be quantified.
There is a lot of talk about the environment, energy and emissions. We all know what they are, but we don't really know how to quantify them or how to relate them to our daily lives:
we are told that one choice is "better than another", that we should cycle more and drive less, turn down the heating at home, eat more seasonal food and less meat, and so on... But how much do these choices weigh on sustainability goals? How can we compare one behaviour with another?
Resconda was founded to help people "count", so that everyone, even without special expertise, can
"learn to calculate" their own impact, just as children are taught to do sums.
This is the first step towards a society of collective, shared environmental knowledge: a society in which
each of us is able to choose, in everyday life, which actions to take, which behaviours to adopt and
what to consume in order to reach our own environmental sustainability goal.
With a view to consciously restoring the balance between humanity and the environment, Resconda's aim is to enable each of us to:
"Conoscere per deliberare" ("know in order to decide"), the best known of Luigi Einaudi's "Prediche inutili" ("Useless sermons"), is a fundamental principle for individual action in politics, economics and society. It is time to apply this principle to the environment and to humanity's interaction with it, so that everyone can act knowingly, choosing how and how far to reduce their environmental impact.
It is time to give everyone the chance to get down to the reality of the environmental problem: workable solutions, the numbers at stake, priorities, informed choices. Only in this way can we secure the widest rights and opportunities for future generations, within the limits irrevocably set by the ecosystem of which humanity is a part.
